關於滑雪最古老的信息來自於考古發現：考古學家在俄羅斯北部發現了最古老的滑雪類物品碎片，可追溯至公元前6300-5000年。此外，還在中國阿爾泰區域發現了5000年前的繪畫，表明原住民使用過滑雪板。滑雪是人們為了在冬季進行旅行、交易、狩獵時便捷地在雪地上行走所發明的交通方式。在滑雪時，人們需要將靴子前端固定在滑雪板上，後端不固定，便於屈膝轉彎及下坡時控制速度和方向，這種滑雪方式被稱為北歐式滑雪。由於北歐式滑雪的屈膝轉彎動作不適用在路面陡峭的歐洲大陸，於是人們把靴子前後兩端都固定在滑板上，在陡坡滑行時能夠更有效地控制雪板。這種靴子兩端都固定在滑雪板上的滑雪方式，後來被稱作高山滑雪。靴子後端是否固定在滑雪板上，是北歐式滑雪和高山滑雪的重要區別。十九世紀末，滑雪逐漸成為運動項目。於1924年霞慕尼冬季奧運會中，滑雪被列為正式比賽項目。在二次大戰時，奧地利及瑞士一帶已經出現世界第一個滑雪渡假村。
